A2 Level Grammar

Today we will look into all the A2 level grammar and structures that the young English high-flyers will learn along the way and will be familiar with before they go on and start the following level, B1. 

Not only will you find out what the A2 level grammar topics are, you will also be invited to challenge yourself and play an interactive grammar-based conversational game. So, the classic game Snakes and Ladders will put your grammar fluency to test and will help you determine how ready you are to continue your English learning journey, destination B1.

The to-learn list below shows all the A2 level grammar structures. 

These should not necessarily be under full control and actively be used in speaking. Remember that A2 level is a basic one. However, learners must be well familiar with what their structure, meaning and usage is. The sound knowledge of A2 level grammar will guarantee a B1 straightforward learning process.

An A2 learner, before he/she starts this level, is expected to know the following:

• Adjectives
• Adverbs e.g. now, here, never, slowly
• Comparative and superlative adjectives
• Comparative and superlative adverbs
• Conjunctions e.g. and, but, because
• Determiners, e.g. a/an, the, this, some, etc
• Nouns: singular and plural, countable and uncountable
• Prepositions of place and time
• Pronouns: personal, possessive, demonstrative
• Question words e.g. why, when
• Structures:
  • “Let’s” for suggestions
  • “There is” and “there are“
  • “Would like”
  • “Be like“, e.g. “What’s the weather like?“
  • “Be called” + noun
  • “How/what about” + noun or verb”-ing”
• Verbs
  • Present simple

  • “Can” (for ability, request and permission)

Snakes and ladders game is here for you! 

There are two parts. Both of them have got two types of questions:

1. Read the question, choose the right word, and answer the question.
2. Landed on a square with no question? Pick up a TELL ME MORE card and talk for about a minute!

Rules to play

• Each player’s counter is on the start position.
• Each player rolls the dice, moving up the board.
• If a player lands on a square at the foot of a ladder, he/she climbs to the square at the top of the ladder.
• If a player lands on the head of a snake, he/she slides down to the square at the snake’s tail.
• Before completing their go, players must either answer the question on the square, or pick up a TELL ME MORE card.
• If players choose the wrong word in the question, they must move back to their previous position.
• The winner is the player who first arrives to the finish square.

As a teacher, I personally cannot wait for September to play this game with my Pre-B1 Preliminary (PET) learners. After the long summer break, this A2 level grammar revision game is going to come in handy.
