About the task

In Listening Part 3 of the B2 First exam, you are required to listen to a series of five themed monologues of approximately 30 seconds each. On the question, you have to select five correct options from a list of eight possible answers.


Listen carefully for the specific details, trying to identify attitudes and opinions.

Read through all the eight statements before you listen. The speakers won’t use exactly the same words. Try to think of other ways of expressing the information in each statement.


Look at statements A-H.

How could you reword it without losing the meaning? Prepare yourself for synonyms and paraphrasing to help you become familiar with the core concepts and better equipped to identify them during the listening task.

Possible answers

Finding hope in difficult moments, focusing on the positive during challenges

Thinking outside the box, the value of finding new solutions

Growth through mistakes, using setbacks to become stronger

Importance of dedication and knowledge retention, never giving up on goals

Listening task

You will hear five short extracts in which people are talking about life lessons they have learned. For questions 1-5, choose from the list (A-H) the lesson each speaker focuses on. Use the letters only once. There are three extra letters which you do not need to use.

B The importance of developing imagination and inventiveness.
C Learning from failure and building resilience.
D The need for perseverance and strong memory.
E The power of focusing on your goals.
F Living with purpose and good morals.
G How to manage stress in difficult situations.
H The importance of appreciating small moments.
